How To Walk To Help Get Rid Of Upper Back Pain

Walking “wrong” can cause upper back pain and strain.  Walking with poor body mechanics can also cause neck strain and headaches.

There are ways to walk correctly and avoid pain.  Let’s talk about them!

This walking tip will help your poor upper back start to feel better.  It will help you use your muscles in a way that warms and balances them instead of straining them.  You know, after all, your ARMS are attached to your back and shoulders. 🙂

The proper way to swing your arms when you walk:

Thumbs up!

Just as though you are going to  shake hands.

Stand up and look down.  If the backs of  your hands are facing forward, that means the muscles in the front of  your body are short.

Those short muscles are turning your hands like  that.

Now, try to hold your hands thumbs forward.  That is neutral position.

We WANT to be in neutral!  Neutral = no pain. 🙂

1.  When you walk, swing your arms from the shoulders with your thumbs facing  forward.

2.  Let your arms swing freely at your sides rather than crossing in front of your body.

It may help if you think about walking with your arms in the position that a robot would use.  That will use your upper body muscles  in a more neutral position and they will be happier!

If you are used to using poor posture when you walk this may feel strange or even uncomfortable at first.  But as your posture becomes better you will have less and less upper back muscle pain.

Walking correctly can help you get rid of your back pain naturally!

Do The Knots In Your Back Keep Coming Back?

Can you get rid of the knots in your back for a while but they keep coming back?  Or can you NOT get rid of them at all?

Let’s look at some possible reasons that those nasty muscle knots keep coming back.

Maybe we can figure out the cause of your back pain and get rid of the cause.

  • It could be posture-related. Do you slouch or slump?
  • It could be that you always lean into the same corner of the couch.
  • It could be your heavy book bag that causes you to lean forward.
  • Do you carry a wallet in one back pocket?
  • Do you carry a heavy purse over one shoulder?

It is something and that something needs to be changed so you will stop getting these miserable muscle knots.

Did you know that muscles need minerals to function their best?

Do you eat a good diet that supplies lots of vitamins and minerals or do you eat mostly pre-packaged, highly processed foods and fast foods?  They cannot supply what your muscles need. 🙁

You cannot fool your muscles with fake foods.

And I’m a big supporter of mineral and vitamin supplements.  They have made a huge difference for my health and wellness.

Here’s another tip:

The knots in your back may be caused by Continue reading Do The Knots In Your Back Keep Coming Back?

Do Flat Feet Cause Upper Back Pain?

Did you ever wonder whether your flat feet are causing your upper back pain?  Has your doctor ever checked your feet when you complain about pain in your neck?

Well…

Your upper back pain is being caused by something and sometimes that something is as far away as your feet!

Flat feet or ‘fallen arches’ can cause the ‘foundation’ of your body to be faulty. Instead of standing up with nice posture, people without arches in their feet tend to fall forward posture-wise.

Here’s how to demonstrate this:

Stand normally. Now make an Continue reading Do Flat Feet Cause Upper Back Pain?

Lower Back Muscle Pain Can Be Cured Naturally

Did you know that pain in your lower back is almost always caused by muscles.  Why is this?

Well, muscles move the bones, joints and disks in your spine.  Muscles are the prime movers of your body!  You can only move because you have muscles.

Yay, muscles!!  🙂

On the other hand, when your muscles get out of balance–too strong on one side of your body and too weak on the other then we don’t say, “Yay, muscles!”

We say, “Ouch!”

Dang muscles.  🙁

Well, it’s not their fault.  They wouldn’t be unhappy and complaining if you did everything perfectly in all of your movements.

But you don’t.  🙁

But you can change. 🙂  Here’s how:

You can add movements that balance your low back muscles better.  You can Continue reading Lower Back Muscle Pain Can Be Cured Naturally

What Causes Knots In Your Back & How To Get Rid Of Muscle Knots Naturally

Get rid of muscles knots in your upper back naturally!
You can get rid of muscle knots in your upper back naturally!

Are you tired of suffering with miserable muscle ‘knots’ in your back?   Would you like to know how can you get rid of the muscle spasms in your back naturally and forever?

The first thing is to figure out WHY you are getting these muscle knots.  I’m not being silly here.

There are always reasons why you have pain.  Usually the reasons involve muscles.

Muscles move bones.  Without muscles, we go nowhere.  But sometimes muscles get unhappy and cause symptoms like pain and knots.

It’s a big deal that muscles are usually overlooked as being causes of pain.  They shouldn’t be overlooked because they are responsible for probably 90% of all soft tissue pain.

So the answer is not to attack only the area where it hurts because those are just symptoms.

The answer is to get to the root cause of your knot. Figure Continue reading What Causes Knots In Your Back & How To Get Rid Of Muscle Knots Naturally

Do Large Breasts Cause Back Pain?

Can large breasts or breast implants cause pain in your back?  That’s the question I received from Carol.  Here’s what she said:

“Kathryn – Hi, maybe you have some ideas.  I am considering breast reduction.  How much do large breasts play into my back strain?  I used to belly-dance but I think the extra weight up top & out front puts me out of alignment.  I always get low back strain now when I try to dance.”

“The Dr I went to for cosmetic assistance (enlargement) went overboard.   Do you think breast reduction will help?  I am 5’4″, weigh 120 lbs, with a slight build.  I wear 36DD.”

Here’s my answer:

Yes, large breasts do cause back and neck pain issues.

I don’t know how much weight implants have but if they are about the same as natural breasts that’s a lot of weight.

The women I know who have had breast reduction surgery said it made a great deal of Continue reading Do Large Breasts Cause Back Pain?

Tight Calf Muscles Cause Back Pain

Back pain can be caused by tight calf muscles.  That means your calves are stronger and tighter than the muscles on your shin. Our goal is to have soft calves.

Stretching your calves and strengthening the fronts of your lower leg (the shin) can help get your leg muscles balanced.

When you stretch your calf muscles be careful not to stretch tooooo much.  Just a nice, small stretch and no bouncing.

You can strengthen your shin muscles by  tilting your toes upward toward your knees. At the same time that movement also stretches your calf muscles.

Flat feet are another cause of back pain.

If you don’t have your own natural arches, running shoe stores sell arch supports that will go into your shoes.  They probably work best if you wear loafer type shoes or athletic shoes.  You have to buy arch supports that really have a firm arch to them and that fit where your own natural arches would be.  Mushy, soft shoe liners are not the same as arch supports.

Running shoe store employees should know how to make sure they fit well.  They should cost around $30.

Also, try “making” arches with the muscles in your feet.  If your muscles feel like they want to cramp, back off and go slowly.  Eventually your foot muscles will get better at doing this and you will to have at least some benefit.

If you have knots in your back your flat feet could also be part of the cause of those knots.  Flat feet put a lot of strain on your upper back and neck as well as your lower back.

I know this for a fact because I had both flat feet and knots in my back!

But when you have arches in your feet, your head is more balanced over your body and so there is less back muscle strain.

A Common Cause of Low Back Pain

What’s the most common cause of lower back pain?  Well, there are actually TWO common causes.

Cause #1:  Not enough curve in the lower back caused by collapsed or slouching posture.  We are supposed to have a nice, easy curve behind your waist that goes toward your tummy.  When we collapse forward, we lose that nice curve.  You get a ‘flat back’ and a ‘forward head.’

Cause #2.  Too much curve in the lower back.  That happens Continue reading A Common Cause of Low Back Pain
